SPT Group OLGA 5.2.1: A Powerful Tool for Dynamic Multiphase Flow Simulation
OLGA is a modelling tool for transportation of oil, natural gas and water in the same pipeline, so-called multiphase transportation. The name is short for \"oil and gas simulator\". The main challenge with multiphase fluid flow is the formation of slugs (plugs of oil and water) in the pipelines, which causes large problems at the receiving end at the platform or the onshore plant. The modelling tool makes it possible to calculate the fluid flow and safely bring the flow to the receiving destination on shore, on a platform or a production ship through the pipes[^1^].
OLGA was developed by IFE and SINTEF in Norway in collaboration with Statoil and other industry partners since 1979. Until 2012, the SPT Group owned the rights to OLGA. In March 2012, Schlumberger announced an agreement with Altor Fund II for the acquisition of SPT Group[^1^]. SPT Group, founded in 1971, was headquartered in Norway employing approximately 280 people in 11 countries at the time of the acquisition. The tool has been under continuous and still ongoing development, among others in the HORIZON II project where IFE and SPT Group are partners. OLGA has a global market share of about 90%. The technology is regarded as a central success for Norwegian petroleum research[^1^].
OLGA is used to model steady-state and time-dependent behaviours via prediction of system dynamics like time-varying changes in flow rates, fluid compositions, temperature, solids deposition and operational changes. It consists of a core simulator with additional modules for analysis of specific scenarios. These include: Slugtracking â hydrodynamic slug behaviour; FEMTherm â advanced heat transfer; Comptracking â tracking of individual components; Complex Fluids â non-Newtonian behaviour; OLGA HD â advanced modeling of the hydraulics[^2^].
SPT Group OLGA 5.2.1 is the latest version of OLGA released in 2020. It offers several new features and improvements over previous versions, such as: improved user interface and workflow; enhanced solver performance and robustness; new models for wax deposition, hydrate formation and erosion; updated correlations for pressure drop, heat transfer and fluid properties; expanded library of fluids and components; improved integration with other software tools like PIPESIM, ECLIPSE and Petrel[^3^].
SPT Group OLGA 5.2.1 is a powerful tool for dynamic multiphase flow simulation that can help engineers and operators optimize design and operation of multiphase systems, reduce risks and uncertainties, increase production efficiency and reliability, and enhance safety and environmental performance.
OLGA has a wide range of applications in the oil and gas industry, such as: liquids handling, sizing separators and slug catchers, managing solids, simulating key operational procedures including start-up, shut-down, and pigging, modeling for contingency planning, assessing environmental risk in complex deepwater drilling environments[^4^]. OLGA can also be used for other industries that involve multiphase flow, such as chemical processing, power generation, and food production.
OLGA has several advantages over other multiphase flow simulators, such as: accuracy and reliability of predictions based on extensive validation with experimental and field data; flexibility and scalability of modeling complex geometries and scenarios; user-friendliness and compatibility of graphical user interface and data input/output formats; integration and interoperability with other software tools like PIPESIM, ECLIPSE and Petrel; support and training from Schlumberger experts and partners.
OLGA is constantly evolving to meet the changing needs and challenges of the industry. Some of the recent developments and innovations in OLGA include: improved models for wax deposition, hydrate formation and erosion; updated correlations for pressure drop, heat transfer and fluid properties; expanded library of fluids and components; improved integration with other software tools like PIPESIM, ECLIPSE and Petrel; enhanced solver performance and robustness; improved user interface and workflow[^3^]. 061ffe29dd
